HRT for Menopause FAQs
What are the benefits of HRT in menopause?
HRT is the most effective treatment for many menopause symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, low mood and vaginal dryness. It also helps protect bone strength and reduces the risk of osteoporosis while you are taking it.
What are the symptoms of menopause in women?
Symptoms can include changes to periods, hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep, low mood, anxiety, brain fog, joint pains, reduced sex drive and vaginal or urinary symptoms. Every woman’s experience is different, and symptoms can change over time.
Can I take testosterone and HRT at the same time?
Yes. Testosterone is usually taken alongside HRT and can be considered when low sexual desire continues despite adequate oestrogen treatment. It requires appropriate assessment, blood tests and monitoring.
What are the side effects of HRT for women?
Possible side effects include breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, mood changes and unexpected bleeding. These often improve within the first few months, and changing the dose or type of HRT can help. The longer-term risks vary according to your age, medical history and the type of HRT used. We will advise you on the safest HRT options for your personal circumstances.
Does HRT help you lose weight in menopause?
HRT is not a weight-loss treatment. However, by improving symptoms such as poor sleep, low mood and joint pain, it may make it easier to exercise, eat well and manage your weight.
How much does HRT cost?
The cost of HRT depends on the type of treatment prescribed, and medication prices are set by the dispensing pharmacy. Private prescription medication is paid for separately from your consultation fee. If the cost of treatment is a concern, we can provide information to help you discuss NHS prescribing with your GP where appropriate. Some specialist medications are not available via the NHS.
